2 DAY HOLIDAY BOUTIQUE & BISTRO
Mary Elizabeth Basile Chopas is the granddaughter of Italian immigrants who settled in Farmington, CT in the 1930s. Her presentation will discuss the experiences of Italians living in the United States during World War II, with special focus on the Italian residents of Farmington through the lens of her family. When the United States entered World War II, Italian nationals living in this country were declared enemy aliens and faced with legal restrictions. Several thousand aliens and a few U.S. citizens were arrested and underwent flawed hearings, and hundreds were interned. Less restrictive measures included curfews and raids on homes. In telling the stories of former enemy aliens as they attempted to resume their lives after the war, Chopas demonstrates the lasting social and cultural effects of government policies on the Italian American community. She is the author of Searching for Subversives: The Story of Italian Internment in Wartime America (UNC Press, 2017).

Exhibition curated by Laura Engel, Professor, Duquesne University
Pearls figure prominently in pictures of celebrated and imagined figures across the eighteenth century. Adorning royalty, celebrities, servants, and in fashion plates, the mysterious, opaque, and gleaming white accessory aligns with the mutable, seductive, and threatening emergence of new forms of identity. Worn as jewelry, as embellishments to the body and dress, or embedded in the settings of precious objects – pearls accessorize, highlight, colonize, and perform. As one of the most sought-after commodities of the early modern colonial enterprise, a precious jewel tied to bondage and violence, pearls have a baroque and complex history. Drawing from materials in the Lewis Walpole Library this exhibition will explore the “paradox of pearls” by considering how the varied and often contradictory meanings of this jewel appear in period images and the ways in which practices from the past connect us to the powerful presence of pearls today.
Exhibition: "The Paradox of Pearls: Accessorizing Identities in the Eighteenth Century"

// ABOUT STANLEY-WHITMAN HOUSE //
In 1935, Stanley-Whitman House was established as Farmington's first museum. It is a nationally recognized historic house museum and living history center that teaches through the collection, preservation, research, and dynamic interpretation of the history and culture of early Farmington, Connecticut. Programs, events, classes, and exhibits encourage visitors of all ages to immerse themselves in history by doing, acting, questioning, and engaging in colonial life and the ideas that formed the foundation of that culture.
Located in the historic village of Farmington, the museum facility centers on a circa 1720 National Historic Landmark house furnished with period antiques to reflect the everyday activities of Colonial life in Connecticut. Surrounding the house are period-raised bed gardens, an apple orchard, and heritage stone walls.
The public service areas of the museum, constructed in 2004, include a modern classroom, a period tavern room, a post-and-beam Welcome Center, a research library, an exhibit gallery, the Nancy Conklin History Gallery, and a collection storage area.
In addition to managing Memento Mori, Farmington’s ancient cemetery on Main Street, and the Village Green, located at the intersection of Routes 4 and 10, the museum also oversees the Scott Swamp Cemetery on Route 6. The Stanley-Whitman House is supported in part by the Farmington Village Green and Library Association.

// ABOUT STANLEY-WHITMAN HOUSE //

We are told often by spiritual teachers that we are divine powerful magnificent souls. Some of us find this a very abstract idea, some can understand this intellectually and most struggle to comprehend and embrace this in any emotional and physical way.
What is the truth of this statement and how can we understand this within all aspects and levels of ourselves?
How does this knowledge and awareness impact our 3D physical human realities and how can we use this consciousness to radically shift and change every aspect of our lives?
Accessing and aligning with the Divinity within each and everyone of us is our key to ultimate empowerment. Intuitive Artist, teacher and author Jo Jayson will share with you information she has channeled via her paintings and writings that will offer you a new perspective on who you really are.

This Art Show is entitled: Gathered Moments and will feature a stunning collection of original works that demonstrate Charlene’s appreciation for the beauty all around us, and how important it is to simply notice this beauty. I hope that my art will invite the viewer in and perhaps evoke an emotion, stir a memory, or tell a story. If I am able to do that, then I am very pleased.” Charlene says, “This show is about more than just showcasing my work. It is about sharing the beauty around me, making connections with the viewer, and most importantly donating a percentage of sales to organizations with a strong purpose.” The show will run November 9th to December 9th and is open to the public during library’s regular hours.

It’s a Wonderful Lecture is a presentation that has truly resonated on a deep level with so many. Taking a look at the beloved classic It’s a Wonderful Life, Dustin uses quotes, scenes, and characters from the movie as he weaves a tale of commonality and humanity that brings us all together in love, kindness, and harmony. Hear the tale and feel the struggle of George Bailey, because his issues are our issues. We all walk through this human experience together, feeling the ripple of the lives of those around us.
It's a Wonderful Lecture

// ABOUT STANLEY-WHITMAN HOUSE //
In 1935, Stanley-Whitman House was established as Farmington's first museum. It is a nationally recognized historic house museum and living history center that teaches through the collection, preservation, research, and dynamic interpretation of the history and culture of early Farmington, Connecticut.
